This case study highlights the Kenhardt Solar Project, one of the world’s largest hybrid solar and battery storage facilities in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It describes how British International Investment (BII), together with Standard Bank, supported the initial financing for this project’s construction in 2023 and the lessons they learned in the process. During ongoing monitoring, BII noted a high number of women in the workforce during the construction phase –3 percentage points above the national average. The project demonstrated the benefits of having more women in the workforce for the business and for the community. It also helped change outdated perceptions about women working in the construction industry.
