InvestHER: Pioneering Gender-Responsive Climate Finance

This FinDev hosted Grameen Foundation blog describes the InvestHER Climate Resilience Bond (InvestHER CRB) and technical assistance facility, designed by the Grameen Foundation, focused on women smallholder farmers. Initially designed as a $25 million issuance with a five-year tenor, this bond intends to lend to two streams of enterprises: Growth-stage agSMEs and Women-powered MSMEs. These clients would pay back, with interest, the financial service provider (FSP) who issued the bond. The FSP would, in turn, use these repayments to service the bond and repay the bondholders (the investors). The initial plan was to launch in East Africa, however, due to underdeveloped capital markets, domestic bond issuance proved challenging. This led Grameen to consider launching the InvestHER CRB in the Philippines and India instead, where markets and infrastructure may be better equipped to work with innovative financing, and where Grameen can leverage its established partnerships.
