Bridging Gender and Finance: WUSC’S Approach to Inclusive Entrepreneurship in Sri Lanka

This report by World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and Criterion Institute makes that case that while gender lens investing (GLI) is gaining momentum globally, there is a lack of comprehensive gender analyses in finance that identify gender and power dynamics, guide impactful capital allocations, and contribute to the development of inclusive ecosystems. This trend is primarily due to the gap that currently exists between gender and finance: finance experts often lack the skills to carry out comprehensive gender analyses, while gender experts and women’s rights organizations (WROs) are often unfamiliar with finance systems and their expertise is undervalued. Coined by Criterion Institute, translating between gender and finance is a function that bridges this gap. Building on WUSC’s recent articulation of best practices of translation for increased impact, power dynamics in Sri Lankan gender lens investing, the role of INGOs as translators, and mapping of gender lens investing in the global South, this case study examines the translation gap in Sri Lanka.
